Sacrifice
Sacrifice was released in 1998 as the fourth single from Anouk's debut album Together Alone. Unlike many of the other songs from that period, Sacrifice was not written by Anouk herself. The lyrics were written by Simon van Amerongen, while the music was composed by Orfeo Bouman.
According to those involved, Anouk first heard the song when Orfeo Bouman performed it live with his band during a late-night concert. After the show, Anouk approached him personally and asked if she could record the song for her upcoming album. Bouman agreed, allowing Sacrifice to become part of the Together Alone sessions.
An original videoclip for the single was filmed aboard a cruise ship along the Scandinavian coast. However, Anouk was reportedly dissatisfied with the final result, later joking that she looked too much like Dutch singer Willeke Alberti in the footage. As a result, the original concept was abandoned and replaced by a second, much simpler and less expensive videoclip.
The replacement clip focused heavily on Anouk's dog Valentine, showing a more personal and relaxed side of her image compared to the darker and more aggressive videos from the earlier Together Alone singles. The videoclip received strong rotation on TMF and MTV Europe and helped Sacrifice become another successful hit from the album.
