R U Kiddin' Me
R U Kiddin' Me was released in September 1999 as the lead single from Anouk's second album Urban Solitude. It marked her first new release in quite some time and served as an introduction to the more personal and mature direction of the upcoming album.
The single was released in two different formats: a simple 2-track version packaged in a cardboard sleeve and an expanded 3-track edition in a plastic jewel case. The 3-track single included the previously unreleased song Last Time as an exclusive bonus track.
According to Anouk, around eighty percent of Urban Solitude was autobiographical. R U Kiddin' Me went through several early versions, originally carrying the working titles The Other Girl and Dutch Beat and starting out as a ballad. Dissatisfied with the arrangement, Anouk kept experimenting with her band until one member introduced a ska-inspired guitar riff that completely changed the direction of the track.
The videoclip for R U Kiddin' Me was notable for introducing Anouk's famous golden teeth for the first time. Filmed on a beach, the video showed Anouk climbing an inflatable diving structure before eventually jumping, surrounded by her band and crew. The clip received heavy rotation on TMF and MTV and helped turn the song into another major hit.
