Hail
About the single
In July 2003, Hail was released as the third single from Anouk's album Graduated Fool. The song is slower and more intimate than its predecessors Everything and I Live For You. In Hail, Anouk expresses her fear and concern about the unrest in the world.
Anouk first performed Hail at Noorderslag 2002. The single was released as a 2-track CD single in a cardboard sleeve, featuring the album version and a live recording of Hail. A 3-track maxi-single version was also released in a plastic case, adding the album track Searching. The maxi-single was only available briefly, as an incorrect label number was printed on the side.
The music video is a simple but touching recording of Anouk with her son Benjahmin in the dunes. Benjahmin, Anouk's son with The Anonymous, makes his debut in the clip. In the video, Anouk shows herself as a mother rather than a rock diva.
Despite the beautiful clip, Hail did not become a major hit. However, it did become a small hit in the Netherlands, reaching number 31 in the Dutch Top 40.

you've got to pick up arms and fight
for what you believe is right
some say
that's just not the way
you will only make things worse
so I close my eyes and turn my head away
and I hope it'll be all right
fall into a restless sleep
while so many innocent die
that's why I sing
hail to all of us
hail to all of us down here
maybe someday soon
when we've thought things over
we'll know what to do
but probably
there's a much bigger chance, you see
that it will all be gone
so I close my eyes and turn my head away
and just hope it'll be all right
fall into a restless sleep
while so many others die
that's why I sing
hail to all of us
hail to all of us down here
New York City, London, Jericho
Jerusalem, Sydney, anywhere you wanna go
Capetown, to the moon and back again
hail to all of us
hail to all of us down here
you've got to pick up arms and fight
for what you believe is right

I haven't got a clue, I'm living like a ghost
I can't seem to read the signs
I'm swimming in the sand, I'm searching
I hold on to your reasons, I'll hold on to my dreams
it's all good and bad advice 'cause you have to choose
one friend says to go ahead, other one says don't
I'm searching
whatever I try I can't find it
wherever I roam it's all gone
no you can't find it, first you gotta lose it
looking for an angle to change my point of view
waiting for somebody, someone to relate to
hoping for forgiveness, I'm living for love
I'm searching
yearning for a teacher to show me what to do
I'm learning from failure, that's all that I can do
working on solutions, a fiction of truth
keep on searching
whatever I try I can't find it
wherever I roam it's all gone
no you can't find it, first you gotta lose it
you've got to pick up arms and fight
for what you believe is right
some say
