I'm A Cliché
About the single
On 27 June 2011, I'm A Cliché was released as the second single from Anouk's album To Get Her Together, following Down & Dirty, and was produced by Tore Johansson.
Anouk wrote the lyrics, with the music co-written by Ryan Leslie. The song was chosen as Radio 538's Alarmschijf.
The music video premiered on nu.nl on the morning of 27 June 2011, ahead of the single's release. Directed by Dana Nechushtan and filmed in Amsterdam-Oost, the clip tells a bizarre story in which Anouk is repeatedly killed, including being hit by vehicles and shot, while bystanders film the aftermath on their phones and treat her like a trophy. The unusual concept generated some online controversy at the time.
Anouk sought out Nechushtan specifically after admiring her work on Dunya & Desie, and said the two understood each other instantly, with Nechushtan's take on the song going well beyond a literal reading of the lyrics. Nechushtan said Anouk wanted a personal clip that captured her "troubled state of mind", and praised her as an artist willing to take risks, and as an actress on set who insisted on doing her own stunts.
I'm A Cliché reached number 16 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 37 in the Single Top 100.

Living a lie I couldn't go on another day
I must have been way too busy adoring you
It's over
I hear your hello holding up my phone and I can't recall
That I ever felt this sad in my whole life before
My blood runs cold and honestly
I feel lonely baby
So lonely baby
These days are just way too bright
I need a reason to believe
'Cause I keep telling myself that we are still in love
Even though you took off and broke my heart
Letting me know that I ain't the one you're looking for
Why do I keep telling myself that we are still in love
Even though you took off and broke my heart
Letting me know that I ain't the one you need
Talking all night to a filthy sky and some rain
I'm trying to find just little bits of yesterday
I guess you never knew how much I needed you
It's over
My hand on the mic
Covering my eyes so I can't see
That some things ain't just always what they seem to be
Things in my mind keep flashing by
What's going on
What the hell is going on
These days are just way too bright
I need a reason to believe
'Cause I keep telling myself that we are still in love
Even though you took off and broke my heart
Letting me know that I ain't the one you're looking for
Why do I keep telling myself that we are still in love
Even though you took off and broke my heart
Letting me know that I ain't the one you need
We're living a lie
