Birds
About the single
On 11 March 2013, Birds was released as a digital single, followed by a CD single on 15 March, the song with which Anouk represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The song was later included on Anouk's album Sad Singalong Songs, released that May.
The single was released as a 2-track CD single, featuring Birds and the B-side Stardust. Anouk wrote the lyrics for both songs, with the music composed by Tore Johansson and Martin Gjerstad, produced by Instead Of Production and mixed by Tore Johansson.
At Eurovision, Anouk qualified from the semi-final in sixth place with 75 points, then finished ninth in the grand final with 114 points out of 39 entries, the Netherlands' first qualification for the final in nine years and its best result since 1999.
Birds became a major commercial success in the Netherlands. Within days of its presentation it entered the Mega Top 50 at number one, breaking three records: it was the first Dutch Eurovision entry ever to reach number one in the Dutch charts, the first Eurovision song to top a chart before its contest had even taken place, and the first Eurovision entry to reach number one within its very first week of release. After Anouk's Eurovision qualification, Birds returned to number one in the Mega Top 50 two months later, and it also topped the Dutch Single Top 100, Anouk's second number one there after Three Days in a Row (2009). Both the single and its parent album were certified platinum in the Netherlands.
