Wen D'r Maar Aan
With Wen D'r Maar Aan, Anouk released her first fully Dutch-language album. Released in 2018, it marked a notable change in language and tone after more than twenty years of mainly English-language work.
The project followed earlier Dutch-language songs such as Dominique and began as a challenge after Anouk felt musically bored. She later said writing in Dutch forced her to find a tone that sounded believable and close to the way she speaks.
Rather than a full stylistic reinvention, the album places Anouk's songwriting and vocal delivery in a more direct Dutch setting, with restrained arrangements, soft strings and a melancholic atmosphere.
Songs such as Kom Terug, Red Mij and Zwart Is De Lucht explore lost love, loneliness and depression, themes Anouk linked to the album's autumnal mood.
Anouk described the album as probably a one-off project and did not plan a full Dutch-language tour, partly because she did not want to add covers or mix the material with English-language songs.
The result is a personal and intimate record that lets the lyrics come through more directly, while still being guided by Anouk's main rule: the music has to feel right.
